After taking your relationship to the next level with the proposal, the next big thing is the engagement announcement. How you tell the world that you two have pledged your lives to each other is all up to you- but wouldn’t it be amazing if the photos captured your love, passion, and commitment all in one?
First things first, take a whole day out for this. These photos are not only special now; they will remain so forever. That is why they need to be just right. Here are some other tips you should keep in mind when going in for that dreamy photoshoot with your fiancé.
1. Wear Something You Feel Confident in
Despite the obvious urge to buy a new dress and flaunt it in your engagement photos, go for a dress that you feel confident and beautiful in; something you wear on your best days out. It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy a new dress- just that you should try it on extensively before you decide to go ahead with it.
Trust us, when the actual photoshoot is taking place, you want to be as comfortable as possible; a reliable dress you already own will enable you to be at your most relaxed. The more care-free you feel, the better the photos will turn out!
2. Get your Hair and Make-Up Professionally Done
Consider hiring a professional hair and make-up artist to do a light touch-up before the shoot. While doing your own make-up is completely fine, it is better to be completely untroubled during the shoot. With the knowledge that your make-up and hair are perfectly done, it will be easier for you to move around- and offer up your best self to the camera.
This is not to say that you cannot do it yourself. If you know your way around products and your skills are medium to expert level, go for it! No one knows your face better than you. One extra tip: keep the make-up light and glowy- keep the smoky-eye for another day!
3. Do it in the Daytime!
The magic of daytime photography is not unknown to anyone. It goes without saying that natural light will capture you two at your best, and so your photo shoot should be in the daytime! Remember to be watchful of the golden hour- around sunset, the lighting outside is just ideal for a warm, rusty glow on both of your faces. Your happiness will be more than evident.
4. Hire a Professional Photographer
While your mutual friend might be a great photographer, it is not the same as hiring a professional. For shots that capture emotion, a certain bit of expertise is required. Since this is a once-in-a-lifetime event, we suggest you hire a photographer who specializes in couple photography- they would know exactly what to do in order to bring out your best.
5. Bonus: Pick a Place with Sentimental Value
The next step is deciding where you want the photoshoot to be. It is a good idea to do something small and personal at home, but you need the added aesthetics to make your photos really pop. Go ahead and make a list of all the nice places that are special to you and your boo. Out of these, pick the one that offers an amazing setting for your growing love.
If the photoshoot is in a familiar place, it will do even more to put you two at ease, which means better pictures!
6. Get the Rings
An engagement shoot unaccompanied by your engagement rings just doesn’t sound right. Both of you should bring your promise rings to the venue and pose with the rock on your finger- it will be the sweetest.
There can be a separate picture of you two holding hands with your rings on; we are already weeping with emotion!
7. Announcing your Engagement
Decide how you want to announce your engagement. Some people like sending out postcards to family and friends to share the big news, usually with a ‘save the date’ for the actual wedding. If you want to go old school, you can get your favorite photo from the shoot printed out in bulk and enclose it in a fancy envelope to post. This also works well if you want your announcement to be personal and intimate.
The more modern, and public, way to do this is posting on social media. Maybe you would like to change your profile picture and announce to the world how in love you both are. This way you get the information around with the least amount of effort – and get lots of best wishes and compliments too! How you want to do it is completely up to you.
Making such an important announcement to everyone you know can be daunting. Whatever people say, remember that your engagement and your wedding are about you and the opinions of others do not matter. Smile, brush off the negativity, and enjoy yourself!
