The Gear I Use

Friday, December 04, 2020 | By: Doug Burke Photography

I often get asked about what I use to take pictures. Well, that depends on what I am taking pictures of. Here’s a list of my most used equipment:

Canon 5d Mark III

Canon 85mm 1.2 USM

Canon 85mm 1.4 USM IS

Canon 70-200 2.8 USM IS II

Sigma 50mm 1.4

Sigma 35mm 1.4

AB800

Pocketwizard Plus

My approach to photographing each subject starts with a few questions:

  1.        Do I want to show the entire scene?
  2.        Do I need the background extremely blurred?
  3.        Will the shot be a close-up?
  4.        How much light is available?

When I shoot a family session I usually have my go-to options to carry in my bag. I love the versatility of the 50mm focal length for groups, couples, and semi close ups.

The 85mm 1.4 is probably my all-time favorite with the 70-200mm coming in an awfully close second. These lenses really crush the background, which is my favorite way to shoot- wide open.

When shooting the bride getting ready, we’re usually in a small room where a long focal length won’t suffice. Here my choice is the Sigma 35mm. With great contrast and perfect focal length, this is my choice for cramped spaces.

Headshots in the studio is almost exclusively the 85mm 1.2. This is my favorite for headshots indoors but when shooting outdoors, I LOVE the 70-200mm at 2.8.

Wedding day ceremony you’ll almost always find me strapped with 2 cameras that have a 70-200mm and the other mounted with the 50mm. Unless it’s a small venue, there are my all time favorites for wedding photography.

If you’re a photographer and have some favorites, please leave a comment below to let me know what you’re shooting with. I’d love to hear from you!
