How to Spice Up Your Senior Portrait

Monday, August 07, 2023 | By: Doug Burke Photography

Senior photos sometimes feel too similar. Everyone looks the same, because everyone follows the trend around what a senior photo should look like. But you can make yours stand out!

Here’s how to spice up your senior portrait.

Pick a Theme

A theme can really help you decide what your senior photo would look like. From your outfit to your hair, your pose and even the background - having a theme can help tie everything together and make it look good too.

There’s definitely no shortage of themes to pick from either!

Twist ‘Basic’ Poses

Sitting in front of the camera can be awkward, especially if you’re not used to being in front of it. If you’re feeling too tense and nervous, this can easily show up in the image itself, and you definitely don’t want that!

Take the basic poses - sitting still, throwing up a peace sign, or any others - and add your own twist to them! Maybe play with your hair to keep your hands busy, throw up two peace signs, add a prop! There are plenty of ways to make your pictures stand out while also looking cute and authentic. Not to mention, it can help get rid of some of that camera shyness too!

Shoot Off-Season

Senior photos look mostly the same because everyone is taking them around the same time. You can plan for your senior photos months in advance and take them in the winter or fall instead! Use the snowflakes or the warm autumn leaves to add some flair to your senior photo, and you’ll definitely stand out among the crowd!

Find a New Angle

Most senior photos are taken in a fairly straightforward way - the right side up. But you can make the world look at you a whole different way, literally. Adjust the angle from which the photo is taken! Maybe lie down on the ground, stand in a spot below the camera, stand in a spot above the camera!

Your photographer can help you pick out some cool poses for your senior photos too, so definitely make sure to ask them about it!

Doing something new won’t just make you stand out, but may even end up setting trends.

Find a Cool Location

Most senior photos feature the same location. Not necessarily a bad thing, but if you want your photo to be different, picking the same location as everyone else won’t help. Get creative with other locations! Even something as strange as a junk yard or a laundromat can be a pretty great place to take photos if you know what to do with yourself.

Of course, your photographer will also make a difference. The right photographer can make even the most basic of locations look incredible.

Doug Burke Photography has had several photoshoots for senior photos. Even if you’re not entirely sure how to execute your ideas, leave it to us! We can assure that you’ll have a great experience and the best photos. For more information, call us at 336 486 9932.
